The concepts and terms of epilepsy are updated according to the modifications proposed within the framework of the XXIV International Congress of Epilepsy held in the city of Buenos Aires, May 13-18, 2001. In this event, the proposal of a diagnostic scheme for persons with epilectic seizures and epilepsy was approved. This document has 5 parts or axes that are used for the diagnosis of epileptic seizures and epilepsy syndromes and for the identification of the cause and of the possible disorders connected with such condition. It was concluded that the approval of this diagnostic scheme of epilepsy is not considered as its classification and that it does not exclude the possibility to continue using some concepts of the present classification until a specific one be made.
