Resumen

ALVAREZ QUINONES, Aurelio  y  CARRILLO ESTRADA, Úrsula. Infección recurrente del tracto urinario en niñas y adolescentes y su relación con el estado nutricional. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2002, vol.74, n.1, pp.33-37. ISSN 0034-7531.

A retrospective study of 240 girls and adolescents with urinary tract infection was performed; 140 of these patients, diagnosed with recurrent urinary tract infection and aged 0-15 years, were selected. The nutritional assessment was made by comparison with the results of the Cuban tables where condition, weight per age and size in the group of girls under 9 years were considered. The most common detected germs were Escherichia coli, 78 %, and Proteus, 12 %. The most frequent symptoms were fever, laboured urination and urinary burning sensation. The imaging findings were pyeloureteral duplicity and vesicourethral reflux. Classical antimicrobial treatment and nutritional support were applied, as a result of which an improvement in anthropometric parameters was observed. The prophylactic therapy began after the patients were diagnosed with recurrent urinary tract infection and lasted 6 months. The drugs used were sulfisoxazole, nitrofurantoin and nalidixin acid, a single dose to be taken at bedtime. The number of cases with recurrent infection decreased after the prophylactic treatment.
