Resumen

FRAGOSO ARBELO, Trini et al. Estudio epidemiológico de la enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal en niños y adolescentes cubanos (estudio multicéntrico). Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2002, vol.74, n.3, pp.195-202. ISSN 0034-7531.

A study of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) was carried out all over the country to determine the frequency and some clinicoepidemiological characteristics of all patients under 19 diagnosed during the last 20 years. 88 patients between 6 months and 19 years old were reported: 73 (83 %) with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 15 (19) with Crohn’s disease (CD). The most frequent age on diagnosis was from 10 to 14 years old with a slight predominance of males in the ulcerative colitis and of females in Chron’s disease. There was no family history of IBD. The prevailing form of presentation in the ulcerative colitis was rectal rhagadia, whereas in Chron’s disease it was abdominal pain. The perianal disease was observed in 46.6 %. The most common localization in the ulcerative colitis was pancholitis and the degree III of endoscopic activity, whereas the ileocolic localization prevailed in Chron’s disease. Surgery was necessary in 46.6 % of the patients with Chron’s disease and in a patient (1.3 %) with ulcerative colitis. Liver complications represented 9.5 % in the ulcerative colitis. 33 % of the patients were diagnosed in the last 5 years. Mortality from ulcerative colitis and from Chron’s disease was 4.1 % and 6.1 %, respectively. The inflammatory bowel diseases are not so uncommon and a high index of clinical suspicion is necessary to make an early diagnosis and to prevent complications as far as possible.
