NARANJO UGALDE, Alfredo M.; GONZALEZ GUILLEN, Alexander; MARCANO SANS, Luis  e  SELMAN-HOUSSEIN SOSA, Eugenio. Cirugía de la válvula mitral en Pediatría. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2002, vol.74, n.4. ISSN 0034-7531.

Compared with the adult age, the mitral valve defects are an infrequent cause of surgery. A descriptive and retrospective study of surgical operations of the mitral valve performed over a period of 15 years in the Cardiocenter of "William Soler" University Pediatric Hospital was undertaken to show our experience in this field. Sixty patients were operated on, 76% of them aged over 5 years. The most frequent problem was a congenital valve lesion clinically expressed as mitral insufficiency. Thirty five patients underwent valve replacement whereas the rest of them were applied some repair and preservation procedure on their native valve system. Mortality and morbidity were higher in the group of patients whose native valve was replaced. Three of the patients who underwent mitral plasty required valve replacement in the mediate postoperative period. General mortality rate was 13.3%. Valve replacement should be the second surgical alternative to manage the mitral disease in the pediatric ages.
