Resumen

DICKINSON, Félix O. et al. Epidemiological characterization of pediatric patients with cystic fibrosisEpidemiological characterization of pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2005, vol.77, n.2. ISSN 0034-7531.

Cystic fibrosis is an important pediatric problem due to its high and premature mortality, to the deficient quality of life it generates in the patients and to the absence of a curative treatment. Methods: some characteristics of 15 patients with cystic fibrosis admitted in “William Soler” Pediatric Hospital between 1988 and 2002, were described. Percentages were calculated according to age groups, sex, most frequent symptoms and signs, reason for admission, length of stay, antibiotics administered and others. Results: No deaths were reported during the studied period, it was observed a predominance of pediatric ages (86.6 %), males (67 %) and white-colored skin patients (80 %). The commonest symptoms were respiratory infections (67 %), low birth weight (48 %) and digestive disorders (25 %), which began as an average at 20.6 months of age. The genetic characterization was mostly delta F 508 (66 %). One of the main causes of admission was to receive antibiotic therapy (45 %) for treating lower respiratory infections (22 %) and cystic fibrosis (15 %). There was a total of 72 admissions and 1 088 days of hospital stay were accumulated, with an average of 15 days. In nearly all the cases, antibiotic therapy was applied due to the isolates of Psedomona aeruginosa as a cause of respiratory infection.11 different antibiotics were used, of which the most frequent were amikacin, ceftazidime, gentamicin, trobamicin and cyproflaxacin. The most common combination was that of a beta-lactamic and an aminoglucoside.

Palabras clave : Cystic fibrosis; epidemiology; complications; antibiotic therapy.
