INTRODUCTION. At the present times the infantile obesity increase is significant and the early detection of these problems is crucial to prevention of morbidity and mortality of adult population. The aim of present paper was to characterize the nutritional state of children from the "Amiguitos del Caribe" Nursery in Ciudad de La Habana. METHODS. In March, 2008 were studied (48 of female sex and 51 of male sex) aged between 1 and 6, resident of the Antonio Guiteras parceling from Habana del Este municipality. An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze different variables including weight and height, age, sex, skin color, personal obesity backgrounds at admission to nursery, family obesity backgrounds (parents and grandparents), length of breastfeeding and onset of ablactation. We used the Cuban weight tables (kg) for the height of boys and girls and to define the present state of nutrition. RESULTS. A anthropometric measurement and according the results there was a trend to increase in children with excess weight and obese and a prevalence of 22,2% and 16%, respectively. The family backgrounds of obesity and the length of breast feeding less than 4 months were associated with this malnutrition. This relation was significant. CONCLUSIONS. We think that will be appropriate to extend the study to all the nurseries of this municipality and also to carry out subsequent researches taking into account the following variables: physical activity and food behavior.
