Abstract

Introduction: one the more frequent and visual affection in children is the amblyopia ten times more than any trauma or ocular disease. Objective: to identify the frequency of amblyopia in children of school age. Methods: a cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in school age children between 6 and 11 years in the "Carlos Baliño López" and "José Angel Conchello Avila" primary schools from the Arroyo Naranjo municipality of La Habana from September, 2009 to June, 2010, that is, during the 2009-2010 school courses. Study universe included 503 children underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination. Study variables included: age, sex, visual acuity without and with correction, refractive defect and etiology. Results: it was discreetly more frequent in male sex (50,49 %) and in general, at 9 years old (19,88 %) in females at 6 years old (10,92 %) and in males at 10 years old (10,53 %). In study universe amblyopia was verified in the 1,39 %, the 71,42 % as slight and the 28,97 % as moderate, and the 71,4 % de amblyopia patients had between 6 and 7 years old. There was predominance of refractive amblyopia (57,14 %) followed by the strabismic one (42,85 %). There was not deprivation cause. The astigmatism was the predominant refractive defect (44,44 %), followed by myopia (35,18 %) and by hypermetropy (25,92 %). Conclusions: in the study series there was predominance of male sex, emmetropia, astigmatism and slight amblyopia of refractive cause.
