Abstract

ROBAINA CASTELLANOS, Gerardo Rogelio  and  RIESGO RODRIGUEZ, Solangel de la Caridad. Technology-dependent children, an emerging health problem. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2012, vol.84, n.3, pp.282-292. ISSN 0034-7531.

Since several decades ago, a growing number of children require technologies to continue living. These technology-dependent children should often have nursing care at home. The objective of this paper was to make a literature review on this topic. Some definitions, classifications and principles for home care for technology-dependent children, as well as the skills and competencies that the nursing staff should develop were explained. Although these children are a minority group of patients in Cuba, it is necessary to integrate their care into a single program. The centered care at the family environment, the adequate coordination between the different health levels, the care continuity and the accessibility of the whole population to this care are some of the main basic principles for the implementation of a care program, but it also requires the support of all the members of the society.

Keywords : technology-dependent children; extended ventilation; special needs.
