Clinical decision making during health care for children and newborns has particular characteristics that distinguish it from what happens with adult patients; however, it has not been addressed in the same detail. The objective of this paper was to synthesize the knowledge on the bases for clinical decision making during pediatric and neonatal care. Clinical decision making is a complex process, whose study has focused on the way in which it is influenced by the relationship among health team, patient and family, and on the methods and external resources necessary to improve its effectiveness. In the care of pediatric and neonatal patients, decision making is conditioned by the way in which this relationship is developed and the care strategies that are used. The psychological factors that influence clinical decision making by professionals linked to the health care of critically ill children and newborns must be addressed in greater depth.
