A retrospective study of the breech deliveries occurred from 1990 to 1996 at the "Clodomira Acosta Ferrales" Gynecoobstetric Hospital was conducted. 566 breech births took place during that period: 146 transpelvic deliveries and 420 cesarean sections. Those cases with twin pregnancy and/or fetal death before delivery were excluded, so 120 deliveries and 368 cesarean sections were analized. A similar number of cesarean sections was obtained by random selection through a systematic sampling with fractional interval and selection in 2 phases. Different variables were compared by the chi square method and the test for the comparison of proportions. Among the results it was observed that some factors that were considered as unfavorable for the transpelvic delivery, in patients with breech presentation, were not significantly related to birth path way. Perinatal morbimortality proved to be similar in both groups of patients. There was a remarkable increase of maternal mortality in the group of patients that were operated on.
