BALESTENA SANCHEZ, Jorge M  e  PEREDA PADILLA, Sulay. Calcium in the hypertensive states of pregnancy. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2000, vol.26, n.1, pp.41-47. ISSN 0138-600X.

A prospective study was conducted at the "Justo Legón Padilla" Hospital, in Pinar del Río, between September, l995, and June, l996, aimed at knowing the behaviour of the calcium ion in the hypertensive states during preganancy. The study group was composed of 1218 patients with hypotensive disease divided into 3 groups: Group I (hypertension induced by pregnancy n=50), Group II (chronic arterial hypertension n=42) and Group III (chronic arterial hypertension with overadded toxemia n=36). 100 preganant women (Group IV) without hypertension made up the control group. The statistical analysis was made by the mean and standard deviation, as well as by the test of hypotheses for means and by Chi square with a level of significance of p < 0,05, respectively. The low level of calcium was significant in all the subgroups of the study group. Mean age of group II, nuliparity in group I and maternal and newborn weight in all patients of the study group were also significant, with special emphasis on fetal weight of group I, which was lower than the others. The other anlyzed biochemical parameters had a significant behaviour (p < 0,05) in all the groups of hypertensive patients, excepting the depuration of creatinine. It was concluded that patients suffering from hypertension during pregnancy (whatever their state be) showed a reduction of the plasmatic levels of calcium.
