Two-hundred and six hysterectomies were studied in 1996 in "Mártires de Girón" provincial teaching gynecoobstetric hospital in Cienfuegos, but abdominal hysterectomies due to gynecological septic processes and obstetrics hysterectomies were excluded. A comparative study involving the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in this type of surgical intervention was made, in which the effect of the use of antibiotics on some variables that may affect surgical septic morbidity in abdominal hysterectomy such as type of incision and surgical technique were analyzed. It was proved that the use of prophylactic antibiotics had a protective effect on abdominal hysterectomy.
