HERNANDEZ CABRERA, Jesús; DE LA RUA-BATISTAPAU, Abelardo y SUAREZ OJEDA, Roberto. Perinatal mortality I: Some factors that affect perinatal mortality in 1998. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.1, pp. 39-45. ISSN 1561-3062.
Perinatal mortality rates are today effective evaluators of the development conditions of a country and of obstetric follow-up, therefore, a prospective descriptive study of dead products and neonates in the year 1998 in "Julio Alfonso Medina" gynecoobstetric teaching hospital in Matanzas was carried out. Of a total of 3 707 births, there were 17 neonatal demises (a pair of twins) occurred in 16 patients for a mortality rate of 2.7 per 1000 live births and 63 patients accounted for 65 fetal deaths (2 pairs of twins) for a rate of 14 per 1000 live births. (The sample was made up of 79 patients and 82 fetuses). A database allowed the primary data gathering and then a descriptive method was applied; they were processed by an IBM computer from the University of Matanzas. Taking advantage of the MICROSTAT system, the percentage method and x2 test(a £ 0.01) were applied. Statistical tables were worked out for discussion and compared with the updated literature. It was found that women with better fecundity conditions, no previous pregnancy, obstetric disease and transpelvic deliveries were predominant in the sample. Most neonatal demises occurred in neonates weighing less than 2 500 g from mothers with higher gestational ages.
