PEREZ VELAZQUEZ, Carlos; REYES PEREZ, Aimé y PEREZ DE VILLA AMIL, Arturo. Antibiotic prophylaxis in cesarean section. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.1, pp. 70-75. ISSN 1561-3062.
Fifty hundred and eighty two cesarean sections were analyzed, one half belonged to the control group(the year 1993 when no antibiotic prophylaxis was used) and the other half to our study group in 1995 when this prophylactic antibiotic therapy began to be implemented according to the Manual of Diagnostic and Treatment in Obstetrics and Perinatology. The antibiotic prescribed for this kind of surgery was used depending on the epidemiological classification. We studied variables such length of broken amnion, length of labor, number of vaginal manipulations, including the shown sepsis. We drew the following conclusion: the use of prophylactic antibiotic lowered sepsis risk; the longer the risk factor remains, the higher the occurrence of sepsis and the lesser the protective effect of antibiotic.
