The response to the administration of betamethasone as fetal pulmonary maturant in 28 to 33 week pregnant women was studied. The universe of study was made up of 124 patients, 67 of whom was administered antenatal corticosteroid. The control group comprised 57 patients. The incidence of HMD was 4 times lower in pre-term newborns under complete treatment (p<0.05) whereas it was also 3 times lower in 31-33 w neonates. Complications associated with neonates other than HMD were more frequent in the control group than in the treated group (p<0.05). The newborns of 7 patients with premature rupture of membranes(PRM) and treated with antenatal corticosteroid suffered from infectious process (18.4%); 6 of these women had PRM for over 7 days. The infection seems to be affected by the PRM rather than by the use of corticosteroid (p<0.05). The neonatal mortality rate was lower in those cases which were administered betamethasone as fetal pulmonary maturant.
