BALESTENA SANCHEZ, Jorge M.; FERNANDEZ ALECH, Rogelio  y  HERNANDEZ SORDO, Alexis. Severe preeclampsia. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.3, pp.226-232. ISSN 0138-600X.

With the objective of evaluating the cases diagnosed with severe preeclampsia in “Justo Legón Padilla” gynecological and obstetric hospital from January, 1997 to December,1999, a retrospective, longitudinal and analytical research work was conducted on 118 pregnant females who had been admitted to the hospital because of this disease. A control group of 192 pregnant females, who did not have the disease, was used. Different variables were evaluated: maternal age, parity, gestational age at birth, newborn’s weight, Apgar score and perinatal mortality. A number of statistical methods as well as chi square test with different levels of significance were used : µ= 0,05 (significant); : µ=0,01 (very significant) and µ=0,001 (highly significant). The induction as a way of starting the labor and Apgar score of the neonate under 7 at 5 minutes are considered significant; adolescence and elective cesarean section were considered very significant whereas adolescence, nuliparity, low birth weight, prematurity and Apgar score under 7 at 1 minute were highly significant. The perinatal mortality rate was 1,63 per 1000 live births. It was concluded that severe preeclampsia is a disease that causes a lot of complications in the neonate.
