A longitudinal descriptive and retrospective study on the behavior of fetal macrosomia at the Obstetrics Service of “Dr. Luis Diaz Soto” Military Central Hospital, from January 1st, 1996, to January 1st, 2000, was conducted to identify the most frequent maternal antecedents and to assess the delivery way, the characteristics of the amniotic fluid, the Apgar score of the newborn infant and the perinatal morbimortality. Data were taken from the medical histories of mothers and newborn infants and statistically processed (x2 IC=95 %). 360 cases, whose newborn infants weighed 4 000 g or more, were analyzed. Prolonged pregnancy, diabetes, obesity and multiparity were among their main maternal antecedents. 45.8 % had no antecedent. There was a predominance of eutopic childbirth. 94 % presented an Apgar score of 7-9. There was no fetal mortality and the most common complications were shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus elongation.
