Resumen

VALDES DACAL, Sigfrido et al. Pregnancy in adolescence: Incidence, risks and complications. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2002, vol.28, n.2. ISSN 0138-600X.

A case-control study was conducted to analyze the incidence, the risks and the pregnancy and delivery complications in the adolescence at the Municipal Hospital of Santa Cruz del Sur from January 1- December 31, 2000. 132 adolescents that gave birth during that period were considered as the study group and they were compared with a control group of 132 pregnant women aged 20 or over that delivered their children in the same period. This information was obtained from the patients' medical histories and from the delivery register and taken to surveys. Low maternal weight was observed in 59.8 % of the adolescents. 87.1 % of them were housewives.78 % of the expectants had some disease during pregnancy and their babies had more complications. The postpartum complications were more frequently associated for the mother. This study shows all the risks of pregnancy at this age. Therefore, we insist in the importance of reducing them to the minimum.
