Resumen

VAZQUEZ NIEBLA, Juan Carlos; VAZQUEZ CABRERA, Juan  y  RODRIGUEZ, Pablo. Epidemiology of the premature rupture of membranes in a gynecological and obstetric hospital. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2003, vol.29, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

A retrospective cohort study of the risk factors for the premature rupture of membranes and of the events of pregnancy, labor, newborn and puerperium was conducted in "América Arias" teaching gynecological and obstetric hospital from March 1998 to March 1999. The general frequency of premature rupture of membranes was 17,2%. Of the risk factors studied, there was a significant statistical association with non-Caucasians. In pregnancy, there was statistical association with urinary tract sepsis and multiple pregnancy. The premature rupture of membranes was related to fever during labor, induced labor, fetal distress and cesarean section. It is necessary to increase efforts to detect and treat urinary sepsis since this problem poses the major attributable risk as well as those factors associated with the premature rupture of membranes so as to reduce induction rates, preterm delivery and admission of newborns to the neonatal intensive care unit.
