HEREDIA HERNANDEZ, Braulio y LUGONES BOTELL, Miguel. Age of menopause and its relationship with smoking, marital status and work. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2007, vol.33, n.3. ISSN 0138-600X.
A cross-sectional study of women aged 40-59 from Lisa, Playa and Marianao municipalities that visited the outpatient department for climacteric women of Eusebio HernándezGynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital between January 1, 2006 and January 1, 2007, was conducted to determine some factors related to the age of appearance of menopause. Artificial menopause, previous hormonal treatments and severe, chronic or thyroid diseases were considered as exclusion criteria. Women were divided into two groups: perimenopausal and postmenopausal. The following variables were analyzed: age of the studied women, age of appearance of menopause, taking into account that it occurred after 12 months in a row of amenorrhea, marital status, smoking habit, and working status, where it was considered if they had some job after retirement. The statistical tests of central trend and their confidence intervals were used to estimate the parameter in the population at 95 % of confidence. The Chi square test with a significance level of 5 % was used to determine the association among the variables. It was concluded that the age of menopause of the studied women was 49.8 years, with a confidence interval between 48.8 and 50.8 years old, that it appeared earlier in smokers (48.2 years old) and in those without a stable partner (48.3 years old), and that it was 50.1 years old among workers.
