Resumen

SANABRIA ARIAS, Ana Mary et al. Morbidity in newborns weighing less than 1500 g. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2012, vol.38, n.4, pp.478-487. ISSN 0138-600X.

Introduction: preterm delivery of an infant weighing less than 1 500 g is one of the most important health problems for a mother and her child, as perinatal morbidity and mortality are concentrated in this patient population. Objective: to identify perinatal events in preterm birth infants weighing less than 1 500 g. Methods: a descriptive study was carried out to identify perinatal events in 80 pregnant women with gestational age between 28.6-36.6 weeks. These patients had preterm birth infants weighing less than 1 500 grams. They were all attended at Ramón González Coro OB/GYN Hospital, from January 2008 to December 2010. This descriptive data analysis used distributions of absolute and relative frequencies. The chi-square test (X2) was used, showing 95 % confidence. Results: 75 % had risk factors. Pregnancy hypertensive disorders (48.8 %), asthma (7.5 %), and anemia (6.3 %) were predominant. 45 % of births occurred after premature rupture of membranes. Low birth weight prevailed in 56.3 % of the total. 29.8 % had fetal growth restriction and 28.6% had hyaline membrane disease. Conclusions: risk factors were present in three quarters of the patients. Hypertension and pre-eclampsia predominated as major risk factors. The most common cause of preterm birth was premature rupture of membranes. Intrauterine growth restriction and hyaline membrane disease were the most frequent complications.
