Introduction: the fecundity of a normal couple is about 20-25 % of ovulatory cycles, and out of them, 90 % achieved pregnancy within one year. 10-15 % of couples need specialized care to conceive pregnancy and this percentage increases significantly with woman´s age. It can be up to 50 % from age 37, because the reproductive function physiologically declines. Objective: To determine the causes of infertility in patients over 35 years of age. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional descriptive study, 172 patients with a history of infertility, attended in consultation at Dr. Luis Díaz Soto Central Military Hospital from 2004 to 2010. These patients completed the study. Group I was formed by patients aged 21 to 35 and group II was formed by patients aged 36 to 40. These patients underwent the necessary additional test to reach the definitive diagnosis of their infertility cause, and treatment was indicated according those results. Results: 51.1 % of patients older than 35 years had infertility due to tubal condition, and 32.8 % due to anovulatory cycles. Pregnancy rate was 19.4 % after treatment. Conclusions: in both study groups, secondary infertility prevailed due to peritoneal tube. It was higher in patients older than 35 years.
