FALCON AGUIAR, María Elena y BARCELO PEREZ, Carlos. Asociación del cáncer con los campos electromagnéticos. Ciudad de La Habana, 1992-1996. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2000, vol.29, n.1, pp.20-25. ISSN 0138-6557.
We carried out an ecological study in the City of Havana for 5 years aimed at assessing the likely association of residential exposure to electromagnetic fields with the risk of dying from cancer, an event that was epidemiologically related for the first time in 1979. The deceased were classified by five-year age groups for standardization of rates, and by places of residance, thus a rate per 100 000 pop was estimated. It was observed that municipal standardized rates and crude rates of health areas were among the highest in the country, with an heterogeneous distribution in the studies territory. The estimated values of relative risk and aetiological fraction of risk suggest that those groups exposed to more intensive electromagnetic fields are more likely to have a higher incidence of cancer than those groups living in territories under low levels of exposure.
