To find out loss of blood donations due to prevalence of syphilis, HIV and Hepatitis C virus antibodies and of surface hepatitis B antigen, we studied an specimen of 3 581 blood donors who went to the blood bank located at "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Higher Institute of Military Medicine in the City of Havana from january to october, 1995. Global prevalence of all the markers was 5.2 %, which caused a loss of 190 donations accounting for liters of blood. There was no significant difference when comparing marker percents between sexes. The most affected donor grup was 20-39 age group.
