JIMENEZ CARRAZANA, Agustín; LEIVA MOREIRA, Rolando and RODRIGUEZ RAMIREZ, Rafael. Sustituciones esofágicas: una experiencia. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2001, vol.30, n.1, pp.11-14. ISSN 0138-6557.
32 patients with subtotal or total esophageal substitution performed between 1994 and 1998 at "Carlos J. Finlay" Hospital, in Havana City, and at "Joaquin Castillo Duany" Hospital, in Santiago de Cuba, were studied. This surgical procedure was used in 25 patients due to malignant stenosis (78.1 %). Transhiatal esophagectomy was carried out in 21 patients (65.7 %) and resection by thoracotomy in 2 (6.2 %). The esophagus was substituted for the stomach in 23 patients (70.8 %), followed by the jejunum (5) and the colon (4). 5 stenoses and 4 cervical fistulas were among the complications. The operative mortality from cancer and benign stenosis was 20 % and 14.2 %, respectively.
