Intrabdominal sepsis is a severe problem that is difficult for the surgeon. In order to determine morbidity and mortality from bacterial secondary peritonitis and to validate Mannheim’s predicitve scale, of which there are no national reports, a prospective, cross-sectional and observational study was conducted among 225 patients, who had undergone surgery. The Chi square test was applied to identify values responsible for significant results (a £ 0.05). There was a correlation between mortality (24 %) and Mannheim’s values. The advanced age, the extension of peritonitis and the dysfunction of organs were the variables with the highest influence on mortality. It was observed a predominance of septic complications. The sensitivity and specificity were 87 and 88 %, respectively. Mortality was within the parameters in this type of affection and the Mannheim’s peritonitis index proved to be an efficient predictor of results.
