NODARSE HERNANDEZ, Rafael; LEMES ULLOA, Vivian  e  MENA LOPEZ, Lázaro. Estudio microbiológico de la contaminación ambiental en una cámara hiperbárica multiplaza. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2001, vol.30, n.4, pp.217-223. ISSN 0138-6557.

A study of microbiological surveillance of the environment of a Soviet PDK-2 multiple capacity hyperbaric chamber installed at the Hyperbaric Oxygenation Service of “Dr. Luis Díaz Soto” Higher Institute of Military Medicine was conducted aimed at knowing the microbial charge inside the chamber and the possible existence of pathogenic germs in order to assess the potential risk for nosocomial infection of the patients treated in it and to detect those factors that may be involved. This research lasted 10 months, from June, 1998, to March, 1999. The screening included the monthly sampling of the environmental air of the chamber and its internal surfaces, as well as the masks and the regulators of oxygen demand used in the hyperbaric therapy. It was concluded that the risk for nosocomial infection in the multiple capacity hyperbaric chamber was low, since the indexes of environmental pollution found were not very different from the ones registered in the restricted areas of the hospital. There were no pathogenic germs and only growth of environmetal microorganisms and of the normal human flora was observed. The factor that influenced the most on the regulation of environmental pollution was the cleaning of the chamber that potentiated the inhibiting factor of hyperbaric oxygen.
