Head trauma is one of the most serious injuries in multi trauma patient. This is the reason why we decided to study cerebral metabolism in a group of patients with severe craniocerebral trauma. Sixteen patients with this serious injure were selected to determine arterio-venous oxygen difference; oxygen extraction and saturation in venous blood extracted from jugular vein; also cerebral metabolism rate was estimated. Arterio-venous difference disclosed mean values of 4,8 to 3,1 vol %; metabolism rate was 1,2 ml /100g/min. Oxygen saturation was 64,7%, increasing progressively to 74,8%. It was proved that cerebral hyperemia prevailed and metabolism rate was low, so we concluded that there is an imbalance between metabolism and cerebral flow.
