Resumen

Forty-five patients of both sexes, aged 16-49 years, who went to the Maxillofacial Surgery Service with clinical diagnosis of facial edema from trauma, were treated. Thirty were assigned to the study group and administered homeopathic arnica to evaluate its efficiency as anti-inflammatory agent. The remaining 15 were assigned to the control group and given piroxicam as anti-inflammatory drug. The arnica treatment includes 10 drops of arnica at 6, 30 and 200 CH whereas piroxicam was administered 40 mg daily in 2 doses. Patients were evaluated at third, fifth and seventh days. According to the remission of edema with time, the evaluation was good, regular or bad. The homeopathic arnica was effective in 96.6% of patients whereas piroxicam improved the condition of 66.7% of the studied patients.
