MARTINEZ HERNANDEZ, María Ángeles; BATAILLE SAVON, Alicia; DUCCASE PILON, Marbelis  y  BORLOT VARGAS, Nalia. Costo hospitalario de pacientes diagnosticados con retraso mental. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2002, vol.31, n.3, pp.188-193. ISSN 0138-6557.

In order to contribute to the attention that should be paid to the economic aspects of financing activities aimed at ensuring the quality of medical care and the development of the Cuban economy, the hospital cost was determined in 20 patients admitted to the hospital with mental retardation diagnosis. The average cost of the disease in the analyzed period showed the spending of financial resources after admission to the medical institution equal to $930.00. 18-22 years-old patients predominated with a total cost of 883.50; the prevailing hospital stay of 10-19 days for 13 cases represented 65%, with a cost of $604.50. It was underlined that it is necessary to pay special attention to a reliable diagnosis of specific mental disorders in the medical commissions so as to reduce the number of admissions to the hospital and of medical certificates due to these disorders.
