Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2003, vol.32, n.1. ISSN 0138-6557.
An analytic, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted to evaluate the systolic blood pressure index or Winsor's index in the early detection of peripheral occlusive arteriopathy of the lower limbs among patients admitted at "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Military Hospital, from 1988 to 1999. The sample was composed of 100 patients (number of admissions between October and December, 1999). Once the patients were selected, a form was filled in including general data, risk factors, signs and symptoms and the hemodynamic clinical examination. Every patient underwent a lipid study with serum cholesterol and triglycerides determination according to the established methodology. The complex of hemodynamic study comprised the tracing of the flow speed sign and the reading of the systolic pressure of the limbs to obtain the so-called blood pressure index. It was found that the vascular risk factors most commonly associated with circulatory disorders of the lower limbs were in order of frequency arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus. Smoking, obesity, circulatory and trophic alterations and paresthetic manifestations were observed in most of the patients, accompanied with a moderate pathological result in the measurement of the systolic pressure index, which shows that this procedure is a method for screening, diagnosing and evaluating peripheral arterial diseases.
