CABRERA ROSELL, Pablo; HURTADO DE MENDOZA AMAT, José; MONTERO GONZALEZ, Teresita  and  ALVAREZ SANTANA, Reynaldo. Principales características del daño múltiple de órganos diagnosticado al emplear un sistema de puntuación. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2003, vol.32, n.3. ISSN 0138-6557.

The use of a scoring system to diagnose the multiple organ failure in 362 autopsies of adults performed at "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Military Central Hospital from July 1st, 2001, to June 30th, 2002, that were introduced and processed in the System of Registry and Control of Pathological Anatomy, allowed to go deep into their most important features. A scoring system of the morphological alterations was used as a method to diagnose multiple organ failure. It was diagnosed in 164 dead patients, among whom 52.4 % were females. 41.5 % of the cases were between 15 and 55 years old. The relation of infection and cancer with multiple organ failure increased 76.2 and 35 %, respectively. 80.4 % of the patients died at the services of Intensive Medicine and 69.5 % died during the first week of admission The multiple organ failure, its manifestations and the causes producing it when they persist, were present in more than two thirds of the diagnoses of the direct and intermediate causes of death. Atherosclerosis in its main localizations is the main basic cause of death on producing severe histic damages. On analyzing the diagnoses of death causes, there were diagnostic discrepancies in 35.5 % of the direct causes and in 21.9 % of the basic causes of death.
