Resumen

ROSALES GONZALEZ, Salvador O.; LOMBARDO VAILLANT, Ariel T.  y  REVERTER DE LA HORRA, Pedro M.. Trabajo médico-quirúrgico en un país de Centroamérica en situación de desastre. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2003, vol.32, n.4. ISSN 0138-6557.

The results of the work done during an 11-month international mission in Honduras after the lashing of Hurricane Mitch were analyzed in order to identify the most frequently treated affections. It was stressed the attention given to patients with diseases treated by different specialties, which ratified the necessity of the comprehensive training of health professionals beyond the medical specialization that allows their successful performance in the internationalist mission. 114 patients with surgical affections received medical attention during that period. They underwent 128 surgical procedures, 42 of General Surgery (32.8 %) and 12 of Gynecoobstetrics (9.3 %). These showed the highest incidence by specialties. 81 major surgery procedures were performed (63.2 %). 43 of them were elective (33.5 %) and 38 emergencies (29.6 %).

Palabras clave : INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION; HUMAN RESOURCES IN DISASTERS; HURRICANES (DISASTERS); SURGICAL PROCEDURES, OPERATIVE.
