Abstract

MESA CABRERA, Miguel et al. Recurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular ictus and its relation to some risk factors. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2006, vol.35, n.1. ISSN 0138-6557.

Once ictus appears the pathogenic effect of risk factors persists, and there is the possibility of recurrence. In relation to secondary prophylaxis, it is necessary to study cerebrovascular recurrence factors of ictus. To identify some risk factors for ischemic ictus recurrence, 151 cases that were followed during a year after the initial event at the outpatient department were included. Risk factors were studied, and the appearance of recurrent ischemic events was registered. Statistical analysis was aimed at describing and evaluating the risk value of recurrence of such factors by estimating the odds ratio and by an univariate analysis of the frequency difference of each risk factor among recurrent and non-recurrent cases through Chi 2 test. Diabetes mellitus, hypertrophy of the left ventricle, obesity, ischemic heart disease, smoking, and auricular fibrillation were the risk factors that showed values for recurrence. There wasn't evidence of risk value for the pathogenic type, the neurovascular syndrome or the ictus laterality. It is concluded that in spite of the disparity found among the rewieved medical reports, including this one, the prophylaxis of recurrent
