Resumen

GONZALEZ SOTOLONGO, Odalys  y  ARPA GAMEZ, Ángel. Clinical screening system of the metabolic syndrome. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2006, vol.35, n.3. ISSN 0138-6557.

Metabolic syndrome is one of the main atherogenic risk factors, and thus, it is necessary to early diagnose it at primary medical care level. However, required resources for this are not always available at this level. This paper suggested a screening system of metabolic syndrome made up of blood pressure figures over 130/85 mmHg and abdominal circumference higher than 102 cm for men and 88cm for women. To this end, a prospective observational case-control study was designed in which the study group comprised the patients seen in the health control exam carried out at "Dr Luis Díaz Soto" Higher Institute of Military Medicine and diagnosed with metabolic syndrome according to Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III), and the control group included patients without such a syndrome and selected by simple random method. Both groups were applied the suggested screening system and classified into "true positive and negative" and "false positive and negative". Then the usual formulae to define diagnostic efficiency were implemented. Sensitivity was 76,19 %, specificity was 78,13 %, positive and negative predictive values were 75,29 % and 78,95 % respectively, for an efficacy index of 77,22 %. This allows validating the suggested clinical screening system to detect those cases that should be deeply studied for a better cost-benefit relation.

Palabras clave : Metabolic syndrome; risk factor screening.
