OBJECTIVES. To determine the relation between the metabolic syndrome and the oxidative stress, as well as the strength of association of its different constituent variables. METHODS. A case-control cross-sectional study was conducted among the male patients underwent to medical examination in «Luís Díaz Soto» Central Military Hospital including 30 patients presenting with metabolic syndrome according criteria of Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) and 25 healthy controls. We took variables constituting the metabolic syndrome and the oxidative stress was assessed by malonildialdehyde and the reduced glutathione. RESULTS. Reduced glutathione had a 6.05 µg/mL mean (DE: 2.42) among patients presenting with metabolic syndrome, whereas it was of 14.30 µg/mL (DE: 12.18) in control group (p < 0.05). Malonildialdehyde had similar values in both groups, 3.20 µmol/L in study group (DE: 1.29) and of 3,48 µmol/L in control group (DE: 1.21). Triglycerides had a significant correlation with malonildialdehyde (r= 0.719; p < 0.05). Reduced glutathione values decreased insofar as increasing the number of diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome, from 7.02 µg/mL among the patients having 3 criteria to 4.49 µg/mL in those with 5 criteria. CONCLUSIONS. There was a redox imbalance among the patients with metabolic syndrome, characterized by a decrease of its antioxidant capacity. Triglycerides were the only variable of metabolic syndrome with a significant correlation with the oxidative stress. On note a dose-response relation between clinical manifestation of metabolic syndrome and the oxidative imbalance.
