LOMBARDO VAILLANT, Tomás Ariel; ACOSTA IZQUIERDO, Yaudelis; SOLER MOREJON, Caridad  y  FIOL ZULUETA, Alberto. Effect of intravesical volume change on measurement of intra-abdominal pressure. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2009, vol.38, n.3-4. ISSN 0138-6557.

OBJECTIVE. To assess the instillation effect of different volumes of intravesical sodium chloride (NaCI) on the value of intra-abdominal pressure. METHODS. A longitudinal, explanatory observational study conducted in 100 patients underwent laparotomy the first postoperative day at «Dr. Luis Díaz Soto» Central Military Hospital from January 1, 2007 to October 30, 2008. Each 6 hours a measurement of intra-abdominal pressure was carried out. Study variables included: intra-abdominal pressure measurement with different volumes of 0, 25, 30 and 100 mL, body mass index (BMI), age and sex. In quantitative variable analysis were we used the central trend measurements, variability and form. Multivariate and univariate analysis was performed using the Pearson coefficient and the Fisher test and the test allowed comparing the results. Inferences were estimated for a p < 0.05 value. RESULTS. Mean age was of 57.81 years; BMI of 24.83 kg/m2. Relation among mean values of intra-abdominal pressure with 25 mL of intravesical NaCI ( intra-abdominal pressure (25)), age and BMI was of R= 0.0375; p= 0.7112 and BMI of R= 0.016; p= 0,868, respectively. Relation among intra-abdominal pressure values (0) 4.55 mmHg, (25) 5.87 mmHg, (50) 6.76 mmHg and (100) 7.67 mmHg, were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS. Different volumes of intravesical fluid in laparotomy patient determine values that may subestimate of overestimate the intra-abdominal pressure.
