Introduction: ensuring health and quality of life is a prioritized direction of preventive medical work, which encourages qualitative research as a methodological tool for addressing core categories of health-disease process from a psychosocial perspective. Objective: to determine how the perception of quality of life in relation to health in a student population behaves. Methods: an observational, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. A questionnaire was applied to 143 students, selected through stratified random method, divided into three strata. Results: 32.9 % of respondents considered to have less favorable quality of life generally. The health quality index was less favorable in women; 81 % of young people stated that their health is satisfactory. Overweight people were four times more affected in their quality of life than normal weight. Conclusions: the health determinant that affects the students interviewed is human biology, what makes us think about the work of health services and the great possibilities of intervention present here.
