Abstract

VEGA JIMENEZ, Junior  and  HURTADO DE MENDOZA AMAT, José. Clinical-pathological relationship of causes of death in Matanzas Military Hospital. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2019, vol.48, n.1, e246.  Epub Mar 01, 2019. ISSN 0138-6557.

Introduction:

The correct establishment of the clinical-pathological relationship is an indicator of the quality of hospital medical care.

Objective:

To characterize the clinical-pathological correlation of death causes in Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital.

Methods:

This is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study of all the deceases with autopsy at Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital from January 1986 to December 2015.

Results:

The deceases aged 15 to older than 85 years. There was a predominance of men (1315, 58.3%). The most represented age group was 65-74 years old (28.6%). Bronchopneumonia was the main direct cause of death, both by clinical diagnosis (15.3%) and pathological diagnosis (20.3%). Generalized atherosclerosis represented the most frequent basic cause according to clinical diagnosis (13.8%) and pathological (18.5%). There were 20.6% of diagnostic discrepancies in the direct causes of death and 23.5% in the basic causes. The total diagnostic coincidence in direct and basic causes was 74.9% and 68.9%, respectively. The highest diagnostic discrepancies corresponded to pulmonary thromboembolism (39.0%) and acute myocardial infarction (34.0%).

Conclusions:

The general and particular clinicopathological correlation, in the causes of direct and basic death, reached values that are within the national average. Diagnostic discrepancies are present in one out of every four autopsies.
