Abstract

DOIMEADIOS REYES, Yaima  and  SANCHEZ LLANES, Ana. Productivity and Efficiency in the Cuban Economy: An Empirical Approach. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2015, vol.153, suppl.1, pp.90-107. ISSN ISSN.

Technical efficiency was estimated in a firm level panel in Agriculture, Industry and Hotel and Restaurants sectors through Stochastic Frontier Analysis. Results validate the presence of significant inefficiency, so the estimation of traditional production function estimation would not be appropriate. In every case the production gap was 5 times more than the effective production in all the sectors. In the case of the industrial sector, the most important factors to explain inefficiency were variables related to different types of salary and regulatory variables. The importance, in policy terms, of working towards individual and firm incentives was verified as a channel to reduce inefficiency.

Keywords : efficiency; productivity.
