Abstract

RIOS, Germán. Challenges for Productive Transformation of Latin America. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2016, vol.156, n.1, pp.53-61. ISSN ISSN.

During the last fifteen years, Latin America enjoyed a favorable external context that, together with a better implementation of macroeconomic and social policies, allowed it to grow and to reduce its poverty and inequality levels considerably. However, the new international environment has revealed some of the yet unresolved tasks in the region, and the new perspectives raise concerns about the possibility of going back in some of the achieved advances. To avoid this, the region needs to increase its potential growing through the increase of productivity and competitiveness. In this regard, it is necessary to advance in a productive transformation agenda which focuses on closing the infrastructure gap, improving education quality and promoting innovation. These are the key elements for increasing productivity in the region.
