This paper deals with major challenges faced by Cubans concerning labor and care, from the perspective on the care economy and its implications for gender equality. Concepts are discussed first, and then the current situation of labor and care in Cuba is depicted. Some suggestions about what kind of public policies should be adopted are made. The results show that, in spite of the progress made in Cuban women’s rights and opportunities, gender equality is not fully guaranteed, which is showed mostly in sociocultural patterns accentuating the sexual division of labor.
