Abstract

SALAZAR, José Manuel. Panama Requires an Economic Policy COVID-19. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2021, vol.165, suppl.1, e8.  Epub Jan 21, 2021. ISSN ISSN.

This article exposes the reality of Panama's population in the face of the global pandemic. Due to the high rate of deaths from COVID-19, health authorities recommend to the government a total quarantine to stop the contagion. Panama is the sixth most unequal country, where one of the most affected sectors is the informal sector; the economic model used is geographically concentrated, therefore, it is urgent to implement an economic policy that ensures inclusive participation, which has as its center the life of the people, not profit and the market. The new reality forces us to change and see the human being from another perspective, not as a commodity. The current circumstances make it necessary to seek an effective economic policy where dialogue is used as a tool where trust, transparency and accountability are fundamental.

Keywords : crisis; inequality; informality; pandemic; solidarity.
