This research establishes the main institutional challenges that the Cuban financial system must face in order to strengthen its operation, so it can be in better shape to contribute to the economic model update and to enforce the country's development strategy. To achieve this, the theoretical approach of the New Institutional Economy and the channels through which institutions influence financial development and economic growth. Taking this conceptual basis as a reference, the issues facing the Cuban financial system’s process of institutional change in the in recent years are shown. Also, the problems of the financial system are described from an institutional perspective. Finally, policy recommendations are presented for the transformation and development of the financial system.
