Milk samples coming from the central zone of Mexico (9 raw, 20 ultrapasteurized (UHT) and 15 organic) were surveyed for determining the presence of aflatoxin M1, using a solid phase extraction column (C18), prederivatization with trifluoracetic acid and liquid chromatography coupled to a fluorescence detector. Analytical results showed that the 59% of the samples was contaminated with aflatoxin M1, and all the cases were above the maximum level of 0.05 µg/Kg set by the European regulations for aflatoxin M1 in liquid milk. The medians of aflatoxin M1 found in raw, ultrapasteurized and organic milk samples were 16.21; 16.1 and 23.1 µg/Kg respectively. The percentage of samples above the maximum limit of residual was smaller in organic milk production (20%) compared with the raw and ultrapasteurized milks that were respectively above the 50 and 60%.
