SANCHEZ, Lilian et al. In vitro ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF Lactobacillus spp. STRAINS AS A PROBIOTIC CANDIDATE. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.3, pp. 154-160. ISSN 0253-570X.

The use of lactobacilli as probiotics in recent years had has an increased interest due to their beneficial properties in animals and humans. In order to isolate and characterize Lactobacillus spp. vaginal strains by in vitro tests to consider their subsequent application as a probiotic, 24 strains identified at group level by the carbohydrate fermentation profile and gas production from glucose were isolated. Growth stability of all strains was determined at acid pH and at different temperatures. From them, 9 strains were selected showing the best probiotic characteristics as candidates by their scores on tests of hydrophobic versus organic solvents such as toluene, xylene and hexadecane positive hemagglutination against human erythrocytes, autoaggregation, coaggregation with Escherichia coli and Candida albicans, inhibiting the growth of these pathogens. The susceptibility profile of 17 antimicrobials was evaluated, showing resistance in 7 of them.
