CALDERON TOBAR, Ángela; MARRERO FAZ, Evangelina; MURILLLO, V  e  VEGA, V. CASE REPORT OF BOVINE ENZOOTIC HEMATURIA ASSOCIATED TO THE INGESTION OF Pteridium arachnoideum IN THE REGION OF SAN MIGUEL DE BOLIVAR, BOLIVAR PROVINCE, ECUADOR. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.3, pp. 197-202. ISSN 0253-570X.

The objective of this study was to demonstrate that the Bovine Enzootic Haematuria (BHE) is present in the country. We chose the San Miguel de Bolivar, Bolivar Province. The research included surveys of producers on clinical signs and deaths with haematuria also possible risk factors associated to the presence of ferns, also laboratory analysis of the blood, presence of blood in urine and detection of blood parasites. Ferns were sampled for botanical identification. Geography coordinates were measured for georeference. The fern was identified as Pteridium arachnoideum present at an average altitude of 1698 m.o.s.l with a range between 1254 and 2210 m.o.s.l all coincident with the affected farms. Risk analysis showed that the mortality associated with haematuria occurred only in the presence of P. arachnoideum and a tendency (P> 0.1) to have a high odds ratio (14) between the presence of fern and clinical symptoms. It was also confirmed a long clinical course leading to cachexia without fever, with apparent hypo colored mucosa. The clinical analysis showed anemia with varied intensity and a depressed white blood cell picture. It was demonstrated blood in the urine in the affected herds. The tests were negative for blood parasites. The results showed strong evidence of the presence of HEB in this region of Ecuador.
