Abstract

GARCIA, Radamés L. et al. Comparison between an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and the microscopic agglutination test for the detection of leptospiral antibodies in dogs. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2014, vol.36, n.2, pp.118-123. ISSN 0253-570X.

In order to compare an indirect ELISA with the use of antigen derivated from Leptospira biflexa Semaranga serogroup, serovar Patoc and microscopic agglutination test (MAT) in the serological diagnosis of canine leptospirosis, 77 samples of blood serum from dogs with suspected leptospirosis (Group 1) and 84 samples from apparently healthy animals (Group 2) were used. They were simultaneously researched by the enzyme immunoassay technique and microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Prevalence values obtained by MAT and ELISA, and between the two groups, showed no significant differences indicating coincidence between the two methods and the existence of a widespread circulation of leptospire strains in clinically healthy animals. The most frequent serovars were Canicola and Icterohaemorrhagiae in Grupo 1 and Canicola and Ballum in Group 2. The indirect ELISA in both groups showed full coincidence with MAT, 92,2% and 91,6% respectively. The ELISA evaluated showed a relative sensitivity of 92,8% and a relative specificity of 91,8% in Group 1, and 90,3% and 92.4% in Group 2 respectively. Kappa coefficient was similar in both groups (0,8) confirming correlation between the two techniques. From the results obtained, it is recommended to continue this development with the use this ELISA in the diagnosis of canine leptospirosis.
