Resumen

PAIXAO, Armindo et al. Phytochemical screening of Tephrosia vogelii Hook, Chenopodium ambrosoides, Cajanus cajan and Solanum nigrum L. methanol extracts in Huambo province, Angola. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2014, vol.36, n.3, pp.164-169. ISSN 0253-570X.

The plant species Tephrosia vogelii Hook, Chenopodium ambrosoides, Cajanus cajan and Solanum nigrum L. are traditionally used in animal and human antiparasites in Huambo province, Angola. The objective of the present paper was to determine the phytochemical composition of methanol extracts from the leaves of these species. Samples were collected in areas of the Comuna Commander Nzajien, Huambo province, in the rainy season. They were dried, ground and moved to the National Center for Animal and Plant Health (CENSA) for the phytochemical screening procedure. The main groups found were: primary and secondary amines, free phenols, tannins, triterpenes and /or steroids, alkaloids, flavonoids and leucoanthocyanidins. The primary and secondary amino compounds and phenol groups were found significantly in the leaves of the fourth species, tannins were evident equally in three of the plants studied except in Solanum nigrum which had a slight presence. It is concluded that the methanol extracts of the plants evaluated had secondary metabolites in notable concentrations. Tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and steroids were highlighted, due to their significant presence, resulting of biological and pharmaceutical interest for their potential therapeutic applications.
