Abstract

ALDAZ CARDENAS, Jaime W.  and  GARCIA-DIAZ, Juan R.. Hematologic and biochemical profile of experimentally infected dogs with different variants of canine parvovirus type 2 (PVC-2) in the province of Bolívar, Ecuador. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2015, vol.37, n.3, pp.173-182. ISSN 0253-570X.

The objective was to characterize the clinical signs and symptoms in crossbred dogs experimentally infected with the variants of PVC-2a and PVC-2c. Eighteen clinically healthy animals of 3 to 4 months of age age and 6 ± 0.5 kg of body weight were used. Three groups of 6 animals each were formed; one group infected with PVC-2a, another with PVC-2c, and a third group left as a negative control. The clinical evolution of the animals was monitored, including hematologic and biochemical studies. Student´s t test was used to compare the average time for symptom appearance. An analysis of viariance of simple classification (ANOVA) and the LSD test were used for the hematologic and biochemical analyses. The inoculated animals presented PVC symptoms .The clinical signs and symptoms were more severe in the animals with PVC-2c, where leucopenia and mental depression appeared earlier (p<0,05), and they presented higher clinical points (p<0,05), lower levels of total leucocytes, linfocytes, and neutrophils, higher concentrations of reactive C protein and ceruloplasmin in the blood plasma than in those animals in the group affected with PVC-2a (p<0,05). It was concluded that the clinical symptoms of crossbred dogs experimentally infected with the variants PVC-2a and PVC-2c were characterized by leucopenia, lymphopenia, dehydration, mental depression, a significant decrease in total proteins and glucose, as well as an increase of acute phase proteins and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), symptoms which were more severe in the animals inoculated with PVC-2c.
